Senator Smith just voted "Nay" on *all three* amendments to the new FISA bill (all of which failed) that would allow for at least the *possibility* that the telecoms would be held responsible for their illegal warrantless wiretapping.
The Dodd Amendment: www.senate.gov/legislativ...ote_cfm.cfm
The Specter Amendment: www.senate.gov/legislativ...ote_cfm.cfm
The Bingaman Amendment: www.senate.gov/legislativ...ote_cfm.cfm
This is (yet another) dark day for U.S. Government history, the Fourth Amendment, and the American People, and Senator Smith didn't just allow it to happen; he *made* it happen.
Senator Ron Wyden voted "Yea" on all three amendments. My deepest thanks to him.
The FISA Amendments Act, including telecom immunity, just passed at 69-28: www.senate.gov/legislativ...ote_cfm.cfm
Just in case anyone was interested.

No more support for the two-headed Republicrat Monster
Wed, July 9, 2008 - 2:59 PMI have voted the straight Democratic ticket for 27 years except for a once-every-six years ballot for Mark Hatfield. No more. No way. No how. No more time or money for the gaping maw of the Two Headed Republicrat Beast.
Gordon Smith's vote doesn't surprise me in the least. He's a plutocratic authoritarian tool and always has been.
I'm most disappointed with the junior Senator from Illinois. Obama finally had a chance to lead. He had promised that he would filibuster any bill which included telco immunity. As nominee and probable future President he could have shown that he takes his word and Oath to the Constitution seriously, leads, and has some principles.
Instead, he helped the Republicans and 17 spineless Democratic traitors hand George Bush what the GOP called "more than we could have hoped for". That makes an absolutely unbroken record of the Democratic Party supporting every measure in the last seven years that cuts away at our most precious liberties.
Damn him.
Damn the Democratic Party.
And G-d Bless Ron Wyden for standing up for the Rule of Law, the Constitution and our most precious freedoms. -

Fri, July 11, 2008 - 2:20 PMBest, earliest, and most complete coverage on this (to my eye) is Glenn Greenwald:

Best bumpersticker on Obama's capitulation, before he caved, is:
Prepared to be disappointed,
------but still voting for
-----------OBAMA
