Health Insurance

So, I am about to go the way of the freelancer and be self employed and will be buying a health plan for the first time. I feel wary about screwing up and getting the wrong thing.

If you had to buy your own, which one did you choose and why?

I am looking for suggestions of good plans and also suggestions for good insurance brokers around town. I have a few things I need coverage for and I want to make sure I do it right. I think I would feel better sitting down with someone and finding the right fit.

if anyone is interested in this topic, a friend of mine sent me this link which was pretty helpful for price quotes.

Check with Greg Schoenberg, Health Insurance Solutions, an independent broker with no financial incentive to set you up with any particular company -- he'll help you figure out what the right plan is for your circumstances. He got me set up with Lifewise several years ago. I have a good rate but a very high deductible. To my surprise, they paid 100 percent when I had to go to the ER for stitches, and they recently started covering a percentage of prescription meds for the plan I'm on (which they hadn't done before). He's at 503-665-2728.

Welcome to the freelancer amusement-park ride! :-)

Thank you for responding to my question.

I tried calling him, and I can't agree with your suggestion to go to him. Maybe he was having an off night when I talked to him, but he was extremely abrupt, I got the feeling that he was done talking to me before the conversation was over, and the euphemisms he was using to describe my situation were unprofessional. He told me to "patch my hole" before I quit my job.

I am glad I know what -aren't- my options, so it was a learning experience. Thanks for throwing something out there, though.

"Patch your hole"? Erm. I'm so sorry! That's good to know, though ... I haven't actually spoken to him in at least a couple of years, so yikes ... inexplicable ...

I have had Kaiser off and on for many years, both as a private-pay customer and through my employers. Check out their website kaiserpermanente.org and follow the "prospective members" link for quotes. It's pretty reasonable, in the $150.00 per month range if you're under 30 and you go with a higher deductible. If your health is good and you're mainly looking for a plan to cover you in case of something major, the high deductible is often worth the risk of having to pay for a doctor visit or two per year. I know Kaiser doesn't have the best reputation, but I've never had a problem with them. I've had several doctors that I've been extremely pleased with, and I've found that Kaiser doctors seem to be more willing to refer you to a specialist. Often it seems that private physicians are a little more reluctant to do that because it's more costly for their insurance companies.

I have Providence because it makes the Little Miss' pediatric visits much more affordable. I pay $232 a month to cover her and I.
