Living in Portland..

Hey now, I'm looking to move to the Portland area from around Ashland. A good friend recommended this site as a way to make connections and potentially find housing. My boyfriend of 3 years and I are looking to rent a place. Ideally, we'll one day own a happy home with an organic farm and whatnot but in the meantime we'd be happy just to have a warm, nice place to make it through the winter as we continue our search for the perfect homestead. If anyone has any thoughts, advice, etc. on the matter, please do share. Thanks, have a grateful day!

    Hello Saria,

Sounds like you're looking for a short term rental until you can find something more permanent. Craigslist is the obvious place to start, and if you search the archives of Tribe you'll find a lot of threads about moving to Portland. One thing I'll say is that Portland, and the greater region, has very distinct neighborhoods and you'll want to gain more familiarity before choosing one to settle into. I recommend starting with somewhere close to the center.

If you're looking to buy in the near future, i recommend the following website: www.movingtoportland.com/

    Best of luck!

Thanks for your reply, bro. The only issue I've found with the short-term rentals on Craigslist is that they're usually a room in someone's house. We, ideally, prefer our own kinda scene. Been scrolling through the options on Tribe, as well.
I actually used to live around here (up in Vancouver, though) about 3 years ago. I went to school at East West College, the massage school, before they moved it from Belmont to Lloyd Center. Yea, I always liked that SE part of Portland though, I must admit, Belmont and Hawthorne seem to have become more "gentrified" since I was last here. I like NE alot, too, but I do know that it's a fairly rough neighborhood in some parts. Haven't spent much time on the westside. I have a couple friends still in the deep SE, by Clackamas. I heard it's fairly affordable out there. We're hoping to find something in the $300-$500 range. Hillsboro was recommended also.
By center, you mean more like downtown by the university?
Anyway, thanks for helping me get my mind around this situation; I appreciate your good vibes. We gotta move fast, I feel, because we're just living in my van and it's only getting colder^_^

300 - 500, I haven't seen places for that. Maybe the others can point some out. My own is a 1 bdroom w/ small loft, and it's $950. Granted, in Lake Oswego, but I haven't seen many that were decent for much less.

I have to admit, that's a pretty low range for this area. Then again, friends of mine pay a little over $600 for a very small one-bedroom near Multnomah Village. They found cheaper, but the drug deals outside the house made them turn it down.

Your mileage may vary, but the book The Zinester's Guide to Portland on Microcosm Press nails it. Check to see if Reading Frenzy, 921 SW Oak (an awesome zine store, connected to the IPRC) has it, otherwise the big bookstore does. There is a lot of concentration of Ashland culture stone's throw to Alberta/Killingsworth and Mississippi. It is a little out of the way, but the Tryon Creek Farm is doing a good job of urban agriculture, there is a store, Urban Farm Store, which is a start point for, well, urban farming.
