In a now infamous thread that covered topics as far reaching as snow and Tucson porn shops, a group of us felt a momentary bond over sequential trips to Arizona. I'm not saying I want to visit every weekend, but the sun and warmth were a welcome respite from our grey weather. Where do the rest of you escape to when you need a dose of sunshine mid-winter? How far will Portlanders go for a sunburn and a rush of vitamin-d?

Re: where do you escape to?
Tue, April 22, 2008 - 1:35 PMElaine~, Belize sounds wonderful right now. I visited a few years ago and loved the country...at least up until the point the wind stopped blowing (I rediscovered just how much I can sweat). ;-)

Re: where do you escape to?
Sun, April 20, 2008 - 11:53 PMNo, for reals, I've been going to a lot of disc golf courses. I went to one today, what was it, Davney? (sp) it's up the Gorge a bit, off the Sandy. It's mostly low, wooded and moist, but it's quiet. Nobody else was there. I'm sure the expected snow had something to do with that. I'm new to the area and my friends say it gets busier when the sun comes out. Either way though, I'd say the Gorge has plenty of good, close opportunities for escape. -

Re: where do you escape to?
Mon, April 21, 2008 - 6:36 PMIf I use the tanning bed as much as someone smokes, then I'll believe that. The number of times I use a tanning bed, in one year, won't amount to anything.....

Re: where do you escape to?
Tue, April 22, 2008 - 9:43 AMLast night, most certainly as a direct result of this thread, I dreamed that I flew to one of the Greek islands for a three-day weekend getaway. But, God help me, I was still married.
*shudder*
The only "escape" involved was waking up. -

Re: where do you escape to?
Tue, April 22, 2008 - 1:15 PMI suppose that depends on how you feel about your ex. Feeding him to the Minotaur of Crete could be a lot of fun, cathartic too. ;-) -

Re: where do you escape to?
Tue, April 22, 2008 - 1:33 PMOh, don't get me wrong, my ex is a great guy, one of the best people it's ever been my privilege to know. He was a wonderful husband, and he's now a dear friend. It's *marriage* that I didn't get along with. -
-
Re: where do you escape to?
Tue, April 22, 2008 - 1:37 PMOh I figured it wasn't that bad...I just like the idea of watching Minotaurs and midget time bandits run about. You'll have to forgive me but I was at a public hearing until midnight last night and am quite looopy as a result. ;-)

This is likely a function of what one is escaping from.
A hotel maid in Belize probably does not dream of escaping to Belize.
And there's Nately's Whore (from Catch 22), who loved him because he was content to simply hold her in his arms while they fell asleep.

Re: where do you escape to?
Tue, April 22, 2008 - 6:24 PMA Hotel maid in Belize doesn't WANT to leave Belize. They know they got a good thing going on there.
Pretty much every Belizean I met was all, " Ah poor you, you don't live in Belize."

Oh, YEAH! Newport's my *favorite* beach, and the Sylvia is my *favorite* hotel in Newport. :) -

Re: where do you escape to?
Fri, April 25, 2008 - 2:39 PMAnd while the weather there may suck just as badly as anywhere else you plain don't mind it. The Sylvia is such a nice, relaxing, cozy place that it doesn't matter. With the (incredible) food, the books and the fireplace you're perfectly happy to stay indoors and engage in the deadly sins of Sloth and Gluttony :) -
